Reindeer Running

Just to say a big well done to everyone who braved those incredibly cold temperatures to do that 5km, 10km or Santa Saunter in this year's Reindeer Run at Stirling University. I was in many a layer, yet still near froze myself to death watching everyone limber up for the day.

It's a fantastic cause too, and those volunteers really don't get enough credit for what they do. And those antler hats looked mighty cool indeed.

Great to see such a strong turn out for it. It may have the real life reindeer that drew some in, but the hundreds who ran clearly had passion in their steps.

The Rock Community Project

Kids these days don't have it easy. Just look at this advert for Barnardo's.

Shocking really. It's great to see a project designed to support, listen to and guide children in such a grown-up, unpatronising way as Cafe Cast and The Rock Community Project. Gemma is doing a fantastic job and it's a great looking set-up she has. I do wish I had something similar when I was in my teens.

Hollie Smith in Palestine

I was one of the few who ventured over to 2W1 on Thursday night to see Hollie's screening of The Iron Wall, and found it to be a very interesting work indeed. Seeing the full scale of the project was just unbelievable, and the constant struggle for freedom in its many forms (personal, literal, political, religious) is just far too abhorrent in Palestine.

It was a real shame that not many did turn up however, and Hollie does have a very good point about the apathy in students towards projects wider than their own immediate concerns. You'll see hundreds in Dusk every Monday night looking for whatever fun they can get, yet offer them a chance for a real debate on matters that concern people's lives, land and history, and few will come.

Similar problems were nearly had with the Amnesty International group set up recently, who could only draw the bare minimum amount of people (10) needed to become an official SUSA group.

At least it does seem the few who do care really care. The debate at the end of Hollie's screening was a wonderful mix of views, cultures, voices and hears, all offering an opinion of worth, and listening with intent to its contractors.

Anyway, I would urge everyone who didn't get the chance to watch The Iron Wall, so here it is in all its YouTube glory.
